The Texas town of Athens, as part of their CHRISTMAS decoration, has a Nativity scene in front of the courthouse. It has been in that very spot every CHRISTMAS for the last 30 years.
This year, the County commissioner received a letter from an atheist group in wisconsin, the freedom from religion foundation, demanding that the Nativity scene be removed. They claim to have received a complaint from one of their members locally.
So far, the town has refused. An offer has been made that a banner be put up along side the Nativity scene. The banner says, "At this season of the Winter Solstice, let reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth & superstition that hardens hearts & enslaves minds.” How is that for some serious Bah Humbug? I'm sure there are far more people who would be offended by the banner than the Nativity scene.
The town has claimed that the Nativity scene will come down after CHRISTMAS or when "hell freezes over".
So let's get this straight, one person in town is offended by the Nativity scene so the entire community should suffer because of that? The atheist group will probably try to sue the town over this issue. This is the way these people work, they threaten litigation knowing that the town doesn't have the funds to fight a legal battle, the town capitulates and the atheists win another battle against the good and decent people of this Country.
In this case though, the town has had offers of legal help. This my not be as easy for the atheists as they first thought.
If more Towns, Counties and States had the balls (and legal assistance) to stand up to these fringe groups we could take our Country back from them. We have let them dictate what is and isn't acceptable in the public arena for far too long.
