In the beginning of this whole political cycle, I wasn't a Newt fan, not even a little bit. He has way too much questionable history and an entire truck load of baggage. But I started to warm up a little. I still wasn't a full on fan, but warming up.
He started talking about dragging activist judges before congress to explain their opinions on certain cases. Which sounds good in theory, but practice is a whole different thing. I'm sure most of us can think of a few cases where judges based their decision strictly on their political leanings instead of the Constitution. And we can all probably think of a few things those judges should be subjected to.
The idea of serving a judge with a subpoena will NEVER be a bi-partisan issue, ever. And what ever party happens to be in power at the time would be sure to run all of the other teams judges the hell right out of town. There are other ways to deal with activist judges that doesn't create a huge pissing contest.
So, anyway, today on cbs’s “face the nation,” Gingrich suggested the president could send federal law enforcement authorities to arrest judges that make controversial rulings to compel them to justify their decisions in front of congressional hearings. Umm, that does it for me. Now he is just starting to sound crazy. How can he think saying something like this is a good idea? Remember the other day when I said that Newt has a history of saying what ever pops into his head? That he has no filter between his brain and his mouth? This is an example of that. It's a bad idea and it will never fly and even bringing it up wasn't very smart.
There is no doubt that among the current crop of contenders, Newt is the smartest guy on the team. But damn, sometimes the guy has no sense.
